The best day of the season in Pico!

We saw a total of 6 different species. The tour started with the northern bottlenose whale, a group of at least 5 big males that stayed in the area, and we were able to see them very well. We are getting used to seeing this rare species, and we don’t complain at all.

After, we moved to see some dolphins, first the resident Risso’s dolphin and then our summer visitor, the Atlantic spotted dolphin.

It was time to go for the sperm whales, but while we were waiting for them, we could spot a group of Sowerby’s beaked whales. This season we are seeing so many of the beaked whales.

Our skipper saw a blow from one sperm whale, so we headed there, and for the surprise of everybody, the sperm whale breached two times! When we got to the area there was a total of 3 adults and a calf swimming together and at the end, they dove all at the same time giving us a really nice moment to capture.

And finally, if there was not enough, the highlight of the day: Two Sei whales travelling and accompanied by a big group of Atlantic spotted dolphins. It is quite rare to see baleen whales at this time of the year, since they usually pass in the Azores around April-June, following their migration to higher latitudes where they feed during the summer.

It was a perfect goodbye to our trip. The we had this season so far!
