Pico Island

Pico Island is where is located the highest mountain of Portugal. Mount Pico is 2351 meters high.

Lajes do Pico harbor is where we start whale and dolphin watching adventure. It is possible to watch more than 28 cetacean species in Azores. In springtime you can also see the baleen whales such as Blue whale, Fin whale and Sei whale. In the summertime, in addition to our resident species, you can also see spotted dolphins, pilot whales and beaked whales and sometimes also Bryde’s whales.

The Azores are distinguished as one of the best destinations in the world for whale and dolphin watching and that is why we always say it is a to-do experience, at least once in your lifetime.

Did you know that vineyard landscapes of Pico Island are classified as UNESCO Patrimony since 2004?

Q: Is it possible to see whales and dolphins in every tour.
R: Every trip is different. We guarantee that if you do not see any whales nor dolphins you can reschedule your trip for free.

Q: How do I get to Pico Island?
R: There are flight connections to Pico Island from Lisbon (Azores Airlines). You can also fly from São Miguel or Terceira Island. Also, if you prefer you can fly until Faial Island and then arrive to Pico by boat – connection between Pico and Faial Island is about 30 minutes and you have boat connections year round. To book boat ferry for all the other Islands you can do it through Atlanticoline or in our shop in Portas do Mar, Ponta delgada. See more information about this.

Q:  I have back problems but I would love to go on a whale watching. Can I do this tour?
R: Futurismo Azores Whale Watching in Pico Island has only a zodiac boat. This boat is less spacious than the catamarans that we have in São Miguel Island. We do recommend you to have some medical advice before this experience.

Q: I am pregnant and would like to do whale watching. Is it safe?
R: In this situation we advise the catamarans. The catamarans are more comfortable and stable boats. In Pico Island we only have a zodiac boat, so we do not recommend you to do this activity.
