Whales and Dolphins watching in Pico Island

pico island

This morning we started our trip with great news from the spotter, Sei Whales where around! After leaving the harbor, we headed to them but it was many dolphins in our route. So we stopped, we had a look to the common dolphins, who where feeding together with Cory’s Shearwater, but still quiet interested in our boat.

For the first time this season in Pico, we were able to see Sei Whales. A group of two individuals, heading in the direction of the NW wind.

But we like good weather, we returned to the protection of Pico island and went to see again the group of common dolphins, that were even more curious with the boat and our underwater camera.

With our hydrophone, we were able to listen to their communication and echolocation. They were so many dolphins, that even a small group of striped dolphins were there. The spotter said there is still more whales to see, so we continued our trip.

A bit more offshore, and other group of 3 Sei Whales together with some common dolphins.

When we thought our trip was ending, it was still more whales so see ! And guess what ? A blue whale, femelle and calf, travelling clinging togheter ! What an awesome sighting to finish this beautiful morning trip !
