It was another good day at sea. A few minutes after we left the marina, we encountered a group of common dolphins. These dolphins have been showing up and making our guests very happy every day we go on the sea, since the start of the year. When we got closer, they seemed to be foraging but even then didn’t hesitate to approach us.
After a while, we left the common dolphins and started to look for other species. The expectations were high since we had indications from our look out that a humpback whale was around the area. With our eyes always on the sea, we finally spotted something: bottlenose dolphins! These dolphins were travelling fast and when the boat increased the speed, they started bow-riding, creating a great view for our guests who were in complete awe!
After this exciting moment, we wanted more, so we kept looking! And again, our residents common dolphins that are always around, showed up again and entertained us for a little bit more.
While we were enjoying these dolphins, our captain, Mario, had seen a blow far away from the boat, so we left the dolphins and followed our captains suspicions. Out of nowhere, we heard one of our guests scream « In front!» and we managed to see the blow. It was indeed a humpback whale but unfortunately it kept diving and during the trip we could only see short glimpses of the dorsal fin. When we were getting ready to start our return, unexpectedly the whale hit the tail on the water surface creating a huge splash! The best way to end our trip.
Back in Ponta Delgada our guests had a huge smile on their faces and one of them even said “best whale watching trip ever!”
