Sperm whales and common dolphins on Carnival Eve

Today the weather and sea conditions were great and so was our trip.

First, we saw one of our resident species, the common dolphins, and they joined us to do bow-riding which made our guests very excited because they could see the dolphins perfectly!

After a while, we left the dolphins and moved to the west hoping we could see something else. During our trip, we could see many splashes in different directions and as we got closer we saw it was common dolphins and really big tuna feeding together! It was a really interesting sighting. But we really wanted to see sperm whales, so we decided to stop and use the hydrophone. Luckily, after a little bit, we could hear some clicks, so we told our captain and we headed to the direction of the clicks. 

We had our eyes looking in every direction, searching for blows or dorsal fins, but nothing would show up. Finally, our lookouts saw something and informed us, it was indeed a sperm whale! We were all very excited, especially our guests! We approached the whale and soon realized that there were other individuals around, even a mother breastfeeding the calf! 

We were all waiting for the big moment when the sperm whale dives and shows the tail. As soon as the whale curved its back we told our guests to get ready, it was such an incredible moment and everybody was in awe. Even though we wanted to stay longer, we still had a long way until Ponta Delgada so we started moving back. It was another great day on the sea!
