Humpback whale again!

This morning, after a slight wait for the mist to clear, we set out to the sea once again searching animals. After a while of sailing… our lookouts spotted some baleen whales!!!

We quickly reached the area where we saw the first blow! It was a baleen whale travelling at high speed. After a short wait, we managed to see the back and even the tail of the animal, allowing us to confirm that it was a humpback whale! The animal went for a dive. We also came across a Bluwer’s Petrel a small seabird normally found flying far offshore.

Humpback whales are a migratory species in the Azores, they are commonly sighted during the spring months. Last week we were lucky enough to see another individual, which turned out to be the same one that was sighted in Cape Verde a month ago!
We managed to see the animal several more times before diving one last time showing its tail. Then, in the  was time to leave the area and look for other species.

After surfing the waves back, came agross with a  group of common dolphins, they were really active and curious! Within the group we could see numerous juveniles and calves.

Also we could see Cory’s shearwater and yellow-legged gulls diving among the dolphins, they seemed to be feeding, sharing fishes with the dolphins.

Some of the boats also saw a loggerhead turtle swimming peacefully, omitting the chaos around it.
After enjoying the jumps that the dolphins offered us, we came back to Ponta Delgada, satisfied with a good day of sightings.
