Close encounters: whale shark and baby sperm whale!

The last days it felt like we are in the tropics.  Warm temperatures in the air and in the water so latley we saw already the Bryde’s Whales and Sickelfinned Devil Rays and today it was the Whale Shark‘s turn. But let’s start from the beginning. The different boats which left the harbour today had a bit different experiences, so all is about being at the right time at the right place.

Commonly we all enjoyed the calm water surface with the Atlantic Spotted Dolphins underneath.

We observed several Sperm whales in an area. One of them we recognised as Dilys from the green group. In our research we assorted colors to the family groups which hang out together. But also Orca a Sperm whale female from the red group was around. The small boat got a visit from a curious sperm calf (see the video here) and everybody managed to see several flukes before the bigger ones went feeding in the depths while the calf got its lunch (fat rich mother milk) at the surface.

In the same area of the sperm whale was the Whale Shark coming to the surface and fulfilled for some of us a dream to see it close up. See the video here.

Also in the this region there was a group of Common Dolphins appearing which enriched our trip even more and some managed to spot the Risso’s Dolphins which are always a great pleasure to observe if we got the chance to.

Join us on the next trip for unforgettable adventures!
