A sei whale, dolphins and… a squid for science!

Another great day here in São Miguel, with three different species sighted!

First we saw a group of traveling Risso’s dolphins which were quite shy as usual, but we managed to see their scarred bodies – apparently this group had many older individuals which were practically white, and looked like ghosts underwater.

Soon after, we were greeted by a huge blow of a sei whale – a migratory species, the third largest animal in the world! The sei whale was traveling by our side close to the boat and everyone got the chance to enjoy watching it breathing and rolling its back with its tall dorsal fin coming out of the water.

After spending enough time with the sei whale, we continued our trip. And soon our boat was approached by a group of playful bottlenose dolphins which immediately started bowriding in front of our boat, making everyone smile! We could also see some dolphins mating (more babies to come!) and jumping.

In our zodiac boat Mirone, we also collected part of a squid that will be sent for analyse for the project MoniCeph!

We finally said goodbye to these charming animals and headed back to Ponta Delgada with great memories of today’s sightings. Don’t miss our next trips!
