Special sightings today

Today, after a storm during the last days, we were able to go out to a calm sea.

Going west, really near the coast, we sighted a small group of around six individuals of bottlenose dolphins. They were constantly diving, maybe searching for food. After a while we saw a different group of this species of dolphins, now with a baby.

We then left the area in search for other cetaceans. Suddenly we face four dolphins playing with a loggerhead turtle, (Caretta caretta). They were pushing it from one way to the other and under the water for some minutes and when they finished inspecting it, they continued their journey.

Then, we had another great surprise, a baby sperm whale just a few months old. We could clearly see its entire body under the water and for quite some time. With the thought that this baby should be waiting for an adult that dived to deep waters to feed, we remained in the area waiting to see the adult.

After the expected dive time no adult joined the calf yet but our lookout found one a bit further south and we went to sight the adult sperm whale. We could observe it some minutes at the surface hyperventilating and photographed it even lifting its tail.

This whale left some patches of poo at the surface which at the distance appeared brown as usual but having a closer look there were orange particles floating on top of the water. Whales are known as the gardeners of the ocean as they feed at depth and release their feces at the top layer fertilising like this the water with nutrients. Light and nutrients together form the beginning of the food chain and therefore it has a positive impact for the whole cycle.

It was quite a great day, we hope to continue with this luck in the next trips. Join us to see it.
