Shy sperm whales and hundreds of dolphins

What a great morning! Today the sun came out and the wind gave us a break.

We started our sightings with a family of sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus), in which only two adults emerged and showed up, very briefly. But we had the opportunity to be, mostly, in the company of juveniles and a calf. We saw about 6 individuals. Given their early age, they were more evasive, insisting on shallow and relatively fast dives, always keeping a reasonable distance.

Meanwhile, our lookouts alerted us to a group of dolphins. Can you imagine what kind of species it was? Atlantic spotted dolphins (Stenella frontalis)! At this time of the year, it is already unlikely to find this species, since they prefer warmer waters and over here, in the waters of the Azores, the temperature is already starting to decrease. We are, therefore, at the end of the breeding season. It was a group of about 200 dolphins, among adults, many juveniles and some calves too.  It was very exciting to see them, because their natural curiosity sets the stage for emotions and everyone was delighted! What a friendly company, some showing acrobatic jumps and others very clumsy ways.

The cetaceans world never ceases to amaze us! It is always a privilege to watch them. Have you scheduled your experience? We help you to live this wonderful world of marine life!
