Sei whale opening its mouth, sperm whale showing its fluke and much more!

Today we had a challenging trip that was one of the best recently!

When we left the harbour early in the rainy morning, only a small group of dolphins was sighted far from the coast. We headed out, with almost no birds on the way. This year, although we didn’t go out a lot, we are missing the big groups of shearwaters flying in our waters.

We saw some bottlenose dolphins, a small group, not very interested in the boat.

So soon we decided to leave them alone and try our luck with our hydrophone. With this instrument, we wished to hear some sperm whales clicking, or at least some dolphins.. But no. Nothing around. Just kept on travelling to try again. And nothing around again. Nothing sighted from land, nothing more sighted (or heard) from the sea… And everybody feeling dissapointed on board.. But all our team was working: lookouts from land, boats on the sea, hydrophone, and all our staff with eyes wide open looking for something.

And we started to find life around: a turtle, sharks, a sun fish, a storm petrel, Bulwer’s petrels, shearwaters, seagulls, and then… Atlantic spotted dolphins.

While enjoying dolphins, news from land! Sperm whale on one side, sei whale on another. And there we went! One of our boats managed to see our most beloved sperm whale once again, Mr. Liable.

Our rubber boat decided to move to the baleen whale, which was escorted by more than a hundred dolphins and birds, a feeding frenzy, including lunge feeding with the sei whale’s mouth wide open. Baleen plates on sight!

What a day… We never give up. We will overcome challenge after challenge, as we always try to do. Join us to go out again!
