Calm waters and perfect conditions today for our catamaran trip. We started the day cruising in glassy waters in search of animals, as always guided by our lookouts (in fact today we were fortunate enough to have one of them on board so that he could change perspective, adding two expert eyes on board).
In a short time we got our first sighting, a group of juvenile common dolphins swimming close to the boat, letting us clearly appreciate their characteristic colours.
After accompanying these animals for some time, we continued our journey in the hope of encountering other species. We sailed away from the coast, this time in search of sperm whales. The magnificent sea conditions allowed us to enjoy a calm navigation, contemplating the views of the islands and islet: São Miguel, Vila Franca do Campo and Santa Maria on the horizon.
By the time we reached the point indicated by the lookouts, the sperm whales seemed to had disappeared for a dive into the depths, but in return we could enjoy another group of common dolphins coming to say hello.
Today turned out to be one of those days when patience and an attentive eye are essential, as usual when we deal with wild animals. In the meantime, we were able to see different species of seabirds and other marine organisms that seems like something out of a Science-fiction film, such as the transparent salps.
Finally, our biologists managed to spot the first blows in the distance, just when they were expected after the sperm whales’ usual dive time. We got closer and soon we could see that they were juvenile individuals swimming on the surface, showing their tails from time to time. A great opportunity to calmly watch these amazing animals, taking advantage of the time until they raise their tails for the last time to tell us until the next time.
A peaceful day to enjoy the sea and the wildlife. If you would like to take profit from the good weather conditions, it’s a great moment with high chances to see biodiversity and there are places available to make your reservation! See you?
