We found a dead sperm whale in São Miguel

Today was a day full of guests, so we went out with our two catamarans and a zodiac. To start our trip we had our residents, the common dolphins and although they were approaching the boat in the beginning, soon they lost interest in us so we decided to leave them.

Our next sighting wasn’t a very happy one, unfortunately, a dead sperm whale was floating near the coast. We believe the injuries of the animal where caused by a collision with a ship. Although this was a sad scenario it’s important to remember that this whale will now  create an ecosystem for other organisms that will now feed on it.

The rest of our morning trip was filled with common dolphins that would show up here and there making the day of our guests. Once again our common dolphins never seem to disappoint us.

In the afternoon, we saw the dead sperm whale again, now much further away from the place were we first spotted it and one of our biologist confirmed it was a female based on pictures taken.

We continued our trip, that was once again graced by the presence of common dolphins! Today they were not being very playful so after a while we started moving again.

And soon, we found bottlenose dolphins, also residents around São Miguel. This was a small group that we’re traveling slowly and later we saw them feeding on tuna fish!

Unfortunately, we saw a dolphin with a piece of plastic on the dorsal fin, a proof that the fight against plastic must continue and people should reduce their use. In the end, both trips were fun and our guests enjoyed not just the dolphins but also the sun!
