Valentina and the blue group are here!

Today was another great day in São Miguel. This morning we encountered a really big group of striped dolphins with some calves. These dolphins were having their common behaviour of changing their direction really fast, but we could still enjoy this sighting.

Afterwards, we saw several sperm whales individuals. Six of them were showing the tail and we could identify them with photo-id. The individuals we recognize were Bear Paw, Lala, Tonga, Valentina, Enigma and Surfista. One of them, Tonga, surprised everyone with a really amazing breach. Five of these sperm whales belong to the blue unit which was identified for the first time in 2009. There are clear differences in their tails comparing to previous pictures.

In the afternoon we observed the same group of sperm whales (blue unit) and one individual breached twice, while some showed us their tails.
Risso’s dolphins were around in the morning and in the afternoon we saw mostly adults and some younger ones.

The boats that went swimming with dolphins spent their time with common dolphins.
So whales and dolphins could be ticked off from people bucket list!
