Sperm whales and lots of dolphins in World Cetacean Day

Resident species party!

Today we had a typically Azorean weather day. It was very cloudy in the morning and it looked like a good rain was going to be poured on our blue waters, but nope! It turned out to be an excellent morning; sun was shining, and we were more than ready to go on an adventure!

Our first sighting was a large group of common dolphins. Within this group we saw adults, juveniles and calves. Have we ever told you that this is the best season for them to reproduce? We didn’t make it up, it’s proven! And the clients of today’s trip are witnesses of it. Not only the morning clients were witnesses, but also the afternoon clients were able to spot this type of species on three occasions! There were large groups with large and small individuals where some were taking advantage of being transported by the waves created by our catamaran, many others were jumping around us and others mating! In addition, we were lucky enough to see several newborns with their mothers. What an incredible animal world!

After enjoying this little (though much bigger than us) creatures, we left in search of our next species. Guess which one of our four resident species was the next we saw! Yes, sperm whales! Five females and one calve, of which four of the adult females were recognized from our yellow catalogue! Impressive, isn’t it? They spent some time in the surface, and then decided to go for lunch, waving us with their beautiful fluke.

A big group of bottlenose dolphins were seen on our way to Ponta Delgada and, of course, we stayed for a while with these friendly animals. Juveniles and calves were seen here too.

Do you want to enjoy seeing these incredible animals in their natural habitat and under the bright sun of these days? and live this amazing experience surrounded by high qualified marine biologists!
