Today the sun wasn’t shinning and the sky was cloudy, a huge contrast to what our trip would end up being. We went out on our zodiac Mirone, and even before we board one of our lookouts already had eyes on a sperm whale. As we were moving away from the coast we noticed some splashes in the water a bit ahead of us.
Once we got closer we realized it was a big group of Atlantic spotted dolphins, these dolphins come to the Azores during the summer months when the water temperature increases. After watching these animals jumping, slapping their tails in the water and bow-riding, we left them since a bigger surprise was waiting for us.

After moving a little bit to west a huge blow was seen from afar, but unfortunately as we approached the area this sperm whale decided it was lunch time and went for a deep dive showing its majestic tail. After this incredible sighting we decided to look for more animals as we waited on the sperm whale to come up, and soon enough we found one of our resident species, the common dolphin. It was a big group, and even though they socialized for a little while with us they didn’t seem very interested, which wasn’t as bad as it seems because our look out had just told our captain that another two sperm whales came to the surface. So we left the dolphins, and headed to the sperm whales again. It was two individuals, a big one and a smaller one, so immediately we thought it would be a mother and its baby, but as soon as they went for a dive we realized it was our iconic male Mr. Liable! This individual is a resident male here in the Azores, and the most sighted whale of São Miguel, It has been a while since the last time we saw it but it’s good to know it is well and safe! After this amazing encounter, we were ready to head back to Ponta Delgada, but not before a group of spotted dolphins came to say goodbye! Once we got to Ponta delgada our guests had a smile on their faces and a great story about today’s trip.
