South of Pico continues to amaze us, during the trips of this weekend, we had many different species and also a final surprise!
We saw many sperm whales, and our guests were very happy to be able to take pictures of their synchronized flukes.
We also saw two species of beaked whale, the huge Northern bottlenose whale and the shy Sowerby’s beaked whale. It was especially interesting to see the Northern bottlenose whale, it was a big group of approximately 10 males traveling fast all in line, such a good sighting.
Then it was the turn of the dolphins, we could see one of the resident group of males Risso’s dolphin, a nice group of the famous bottlenose dolphins, the Atlantic spotted dolphin with many calves and new born, and even different groups of pilot whales.
But one last surprise awaited us, and it was no other than a Sei whale!
For the surprise of everybody on the boat, this baleen whale started to feed very close from our boat, opening his mouth as much as possible to engorge a big quantity of water full of small fishes, before to turn on his side, letting us the possibility to see the extended throats pleats, which is a very rare sighting.
We couldn’t expect better and we came back so grateful for this exceptional encounter!
