For the month of April, we were lucky enough to spot 11 different species of cetaceans despite extremely challenging weather conditions, with a total of 11 successful days in the ocean.

The Azores are a known hotspot for cetacean sightings, with a high diversity of species and relatively large populations. In fact, the Azores are considered one of the best places in the world for whale watching.

There are several factors that make the Azores a favorable habitat for cetaceans. The deep waters surrounding the archipelago provide ample food sources, and the region is located along migration routes for many species.

Based on the data we collected during our trips, it appears that the most commonly sighted species were common dolphins, with a sighting rate of 82%.

Blue whales were also relatively frequently sighted, with a sighting rate of 45%.

Other species that were observed, although less frequently, include sperm whales, striped dolphins, Risso’s dolphins, fin whales, and sei whales.

Single sightings were recorded of bottlenose dolphins, humpback whales, killer whales, and false killer whales.

The sighting of the month was without a doubt the spectacular encounter with a group of about 10 orcas on a hunting behavior.

Last year in April, we could observe the famous male sperm whale Mr. Liable, but there was no sign of him until now south of Pico. However, we did observe another large male hanging out with groups of females south of Pico.
It is important to note that these sighting rates are based on a specific time period and are not representative of overall populations or long-term trends. However, they do provide valuable insights into the diversity of cetacean species present in the region and their relative abundances during this particular month.
