We had beautiful days in Pico Island. We were observing interactions between pilot whales and bottlenose dolphins.
Atlantic spotted dolphins surrounding our boat and one extra special sighting, the sperm whales. We found around 13 whales nearby each other at surface. This social moment included some ‘dances’ around each other while rolling underwater, tail slapping, head outside the surface with open jaws. It was an incredible opportunity to be near them.
On other tours, we follow their sounds and found two lonely sperm whales. They were foraging quite far out from the coast, on an Oceanic bench southward from Pico that most probably is full of yummy squids for them! We wonder if these two whales make part of a recently adult bachelor group of male sperm whales that came to visit some of the female family groups wandering around our Island!
