Our morning trip
started heading to the area where the lookout observed sperm whale
blows, but nobody could imagine what was going to happen. We started with 3
sperm whales close to the boat, 2 further away and later 2 more appeared from
the deep. Our other boats were with another 3 sperm whales. They popped up at
the surface like popcorn!

We saw
different behaviours from these three groups around us: resting, socializing,
spyhopping, fluking, and one individual slapping its tail. It was amazing and
sperm whales were at the surface for a long time. In the end, the two groups of
sperm whales reunited! We were lucky to see this beautiful group today!

Afterwards, in our way
back to Ponta Delgada we stopped near a group of 10 Risso’s dolphins.
They were quite close to the boat, which is unusual behaviour for this species,
so we could see them really well!

In the afternoon we started
to feel a stronger wind, but the sea was excellent. We saw various sperm
whales’ tails and we could still see several sperm whales jumping in the
distance. In our zodiac, we had a special moment … One of the sperm whales
came closer doing spyhopping and we could see perfectly how big it was
and the size of its tail. Wow!
