What an amazing Sunday! We went out on our whale and dolphin watching trip with probably the calmest sea conditions this year, and just outside Ponta Delgada, encountered a small group of our resident common dolphins in a resting behaviour, and therefore, not interacting much with the boat.
We received information from our lookouts to head East of the island were we found a huge pod of bottlenose dolphins, a couple hundred at least, some of them were feeding but others showed a lot of interest in the boat and interacted with us making it a quite exciting moment.
The pinnacle of the trip happened when we headed almost to the east end of the island to find a beautiful Humpback Whale, although the humpback is not a species we see often in this time of year, it’s the 5th sighting only in this month of January. We found the whale performing short dives, every 4 to 5 minutes it was surfacing with a loud blow, what allowed us to spot it just by the sound of it, before each dive the whale showed the tail, allowing us to take some detailed photos which will become a valuable addition to our photo-id catalogue!
