Five in one!

Today was a day to remember. Apart from the fantastic sunny and warm weather, this morning the wind was conspicuous by its absence, allowing us to sail through waters as calm as oil. On the first trip, the surprises didn’t take long to appear. We arrived at the area indicated by the lookouts, where we began to see some common dolphins that approached the boat. However, it turned out that this was not the reason we were there.

Suddenly and without warning, something huge emerged from the water just meters from the boat. A humpback whale!!!!

Undoubtedly a great surprise, especially at a time of the year when it is increasingly rare to have these encounters. The animal was curious, approaching us from under the water, giving us the opportunity to see its size, especially its large pectoral fins. Subsequently, the animal showed its fluke on numerous occasions, even throwing it sideways against the water.

To end the morning, the last group of coastal bottlenose dolphins gave us a demonstration of aerobatics and different ways of socializing, both among themselves and with the boat itself.

In the afternoon the wind increased, as did the surprises of the day. The first one of the afternoon: Pilot whales! Once again this group of calm animals let could be seen close to our coasts, as has been the case for the last few days. Individuals of all ages surrounded the boat in a matter of minutes.

After this, we went a little further in search of what might come up and…. it came up!!! Yet another species, this time Risso’s dolphins. Despite being one of our four resident species, it is by far the least commonly sighted of them all. In fact, we are still counting on the fingers of one hand the sightings of Risso’s this year. Spectacularly, these dolphins were swimming at high speed, making leaps to reduce friction with the water. As there were individuals of many ages, we were able to see the change from black to white as the years went by and the battles scarred them, causing them to lose their pigmentation.

As if that wasn’t enough, the day ended with a second visit to the morning’s group of bottlenose dolphins, who continued with their social frenzy of jumps and pirouettes.

If you don’t want to miss all these biodiversity and salty surprises, book your place on the boat now!
