Today we went out for a sunny morning with three different species of cetaceans.
We started our trip with common dolphins. Fantastic group, close to the boat, active and with lots of dolphins! However, not with a lot of calves on this group.
Then, we received some news from land. Our lookout saw one big sperm whale diving, so we went to the area where the whale was. Once there, one of our rubber boats located the animal using the hydrophone. We managed to listed his echolocation clicks perfectly from our boat, and understand the direction where the animal was going.
And there we went! And succeed, having a great chance to observe our beloved Mr. Liable recovering after a deep dive, and going for the next one! This huge male always amaze us with his tail.
We found even a group of Atlantic spotted dolphins spread out over a large area and sometimes even bowriding the boats. And on top of all, sun shining on a blue sky. What else can we ask for?
We started the afternoon with a big group of common dolphins approaching to our boat, always bowriding and really curious about us. It was a great opportunity for taking good pictures as the light at that time was perfect.
We kept navigating towards bigger animals. Two sperm whales were waiting for us. When we got closer we could confirm it was Mr. Liable again. This time he was not alone, a female was next to him, probably in some mating behaviour. We saw them rolling a couple of times right before heading back to Ponta Delgada.
It was great to be on the sea again after Lorenzo’s hurricane cancellations. And even better, with a day full of animals.
