Conference EMMA 2019 in Lisbon

EMMA lisbon conference

Last Friday 15th of November, the faculty of Sciences of Lisbon University held the first edition of EMMA (Encontro de Mamíferos Marinhos). Different scientific entities joined forces to create a space of knowledge exchange and networking.

Through 23 different flash talks, that included topics like environmental education, research, tourism or exchange of data, all the assistants could get a broad idea of the state of marine mammals in Portuguese waters and the different points of view from the people working with them.

Some of our biologists assisted to the event and was a great opportunity for them to get to know professionals involved in the area.

Whale watching was a topic on everyone’s lips as some companies were represented during the event. Legislation, accessibility to whale watching licenses or the effect on the animals are issues that concern the community. It is very important for an activity like whale watching to be represented in this kind of events, in order to consider where the industry is heading and take the right decisions.

Working with wildlife involves respect for the animals and common sense. If we want sustainability to be our philosophy, we need to be open to new ideas and place our loved marine mammals in the first place.
