Sperm whale male tail breaching and big group of females

Bright sun and calm sea accompanied us today to find our resident species. Few moments after leaving Ponta Delgada heading southeast, we started to see the first whale blows.
A large group of 6 sperm whales were swimming on the surface. The sperm whales allowed us to enjoy a long sighting, being able to calmly observe these magnificent animals. At the same time, we were able to observe other marine creatures, such as salps or the mostly present Cory’s shearwaters here called “cagarros”.

Suddenly, looking towards the city from the sea, we were lucky to see the spectacle of a male sperm whale doing three tail beaches also named peduncle throws in the distance. That means making a rapid sideway movement with its tail, exposing half of its body above water, provoking a lot of splashes. Later, new individuals joined the initial group, we were getting to see more than a dozen animals, among them some pigmented and well marked individuals, which hopefully we will be identifying soon. After seeing the last tail out of the water and being able to photograph it, we continued west course in search of common dolphins, ending a fantastic tour with many nice memories gathered.

Tomorrow we are going out again so if you fancy joining us, reserve today to profit of the ideal weather conditions announced for tomorrow.
