Blue whale was not alone today!

Today our guests were lucky enough to watch a blue whale! Here in Futurismo we still get amazed when we see this species, even though they are being quite frequently seen this year.

A juvenile blue whale was calmly swimming in the surrounding waters off the south coast of São Miguel. This individual was seen this morning several times, showing our clients its incredible air blows, which we could perfectly hear.

But this animal had some company today; bottlenose dolphins were curious and went there to say hi to the blue whale. This group of dolphins was that interested in us though, as in Futurismo we respect the distance with the animals, so we did not get to see them close enough to appreciate all the details.

On our way back to Ponta Delgada, we found a big group of common dolphins. We love the coloration of these animals so much! And this time, these animals were extremely curious and approached us to check who we were. Since weather conditions were amazing today, we could even see them underneath the water! In this group we could spot several adults, some juveniles and some calves too.

After enjoying the curiosity of this big group of animals, we started again our journey back to the port. Two loggerhead turtles, Portuguese man-o-war, salps and even a mauve stinger (a type of jellyfish), were observed on our way!

The Azorean Islands are incredibly rich in food at this time of the year, where phytoplankton is blooming. This is why we can find all these species increasing the biodiversity in these months!

If you are an ocean lover and enjoy learning and watching animals in their freedom, book your ticket at the front desk of Futurismo or on our website and live this amazing experience!
