Today we were lucky to see so many different species!
At the beginning of our trip, we encountered a small group of bottlenose dolphins. These dolphins are our resident species, as well as the most well-known worldwide – unfortunately, this species is especially common in movies and dolphinariums. Nevertheless, on some of our boats, this group of wild and free dolphins put on an amazing show, bow-riding and jumping right in front of us!
After that, we moved on to something bigger. We came upon a Bryde’s whale mother and a calf! A migratory species more common in tropical waters. This pair was calmly swimming next to our boat and everyone got a chance to observe them. Although we’ve been sighting this species lately, they’re not so common in the Azorean waters and the last sightings happened in 2017.
Continuing our trip, we found ourselves surrounded by a huge group of migratory Atlantic spotted dolphins! They’re really common here during the warmer months of the year, during which we can see many mothers and calves. The dolphins were really charismatic, jumping all around the boats!
After this amazing time with the dolphins, one of our catamarans also managed to see a sei whale – the third largest animal in the world (and the fastest whale)!
In addition to our beloved cetacean species, one of our boats saw a loggerhead turtle – an endangered species not seen every day!
To sum up, we managed to see many animals today – once again demonstrating the richness of the ocean surrounding our islands!
