Awesome sightings with resident species

Today we had an amazing gift from nature! We started our journey searching for marine wildlife and we sure found it!

Our crew saw a blow on the horizon and rushed in that direction, then, out of the blue, a sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus) emerged from the water really close to our boat 4 Ventos! What a great sighting!

As we were looking at this whale we noticed another blow! And another, and another, and another!! Amazing! They were so many close by!

Two of them showed us their majestical fluke, waving goodbye before disappearing into the depth. Sperm whales can dive up to 3000m in search for food. And guess what these sperm whales were eating – or squid or octopus! Our team was able to see some leftovers of their food but not able to pick it up for further research. Others were not hungry yet and were doing shallow dives.

It was time to leave the sperm whales and to find the bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) that our lookouts sighted from land. A nice group of all age classes appeared next to our boat. Calves, mothers, juveniles, and even a newborn, everything!

What a social group, playful, curious, and comfortable around us.

A group that was also seen by our swimming with dolphins boat after having another beautiful experience with common dolphins (Delphinus delphis) under the water. It’s not every day that our swimming with dolphins is able to interact with two different species, which today, were very interested in hosting us as their guests. Fancy a similar experience? Come and join us, and see what Azores waters have to offer!
