Today in
Pico Island we had a rare encounter.
We saw a Kogia species. It was not
possible to distinguish which of the two species of the Kogia we saw, but the
pygmy sperm whale or Dwarf sperm whale are extremely rare to be seen.

Then we
continue our tour and we also saw three different groups of spotted dolphins,
two groups of pilot whales, one of them with a calf, and we also encountered
some Sowerby’s beaked whales, and before we come back we also saw a group of
Risso’s dolphins.

In São Miguel Island, it was a beautiful summer day with dolphins!
Three different species: common dolphins,
Atlantic spotted and bottlenose dolphins. This last species… with our well
known “Egipcian“! We know this dolphin for some years now… and it is
sighted with its group regularly around the island 🙂

It is possible to recognize the individuals because of the shape of the
dorsal fin; it works like a fingerprint for us! We call them “Egipcian” because
their dorsal fin that seems like an Egyptian pyramid.
