We started our trip in lovely sunny weather with the hope of spotting the first animal of the day as soon as possible.
And the first sighting was not long in coming… after leaving the harbour we were already seeing dolphins leaping high in the distance, and off we went.
It was a group of bottlenose dolphins, one of our resident species on the island of São Miguel. They were all around our boat surfing the waves and socialising, allowing us to see their big grey robust bodies.
Once we left the group of dolphins we went in search of another species.
This second sighting took a little longer. Our lookout alerted us to the presence of sperm whales in the area we were in, but they had just been on a feeding dive, so we had to wait a while to see them on the surface again. That time was worth it as we were able to see not only one individual but four females! Moreover, we were lucky that two of them showed us their tails before going to the deep. It was then that we realised that one of the individuals that showed its tail was Penakabe, a female that had already been sighted a few days ago and that belongs to the white unit of our photo-identification catalogues.
On our way back to the port we came across the third species of the day, our beloved common dolphins. These animals are also resident in our waters, and as always, they showed us their yellow hourglass pattern so distinctive and unique in the world of cetaceans. They were swimming close to our catamaran and there were even some on the bow taking advantage of the waves generated by the boat to be transported. What an incredible sight!
This week is being wonderful: good weather, good sea and marine mammals. We can’t miss out on these great conditions to see these amazing animals in their natural environment. So hurry up and with us!
