A Mako shark, a sei whale and two species of dolphins

After a day of rest due to not so good weather, we went back to the sea. In the begining we thought it was gonna be a difficult trip since the sea was a bit tricky but soon enough we saw one of our resident species surfing the waves, the common dolphins. It was a big group with many babies, travelling fast. Some of them were interested and joined us by bow riding the boat. The other were more interested on the food so they just kept on foraging.

After receiving information from one of our lookouts that there was a whale around we decided it was time to go. As we got to the area where it was last seen, we looked all around us hoping that at any moment we would see a blow. Even though we didn’t have any sign of the whale, a group of Atlantic spotted dolphins decided to show up and surprise us! Socializing as always these dolphins were bowriding, making incredible jumps and mating, until the whale finally came to the surface.

Just like the days before, this species, the sei whale, has been sighted a lot even though it’s more likely to see it during the spring time. In the begining we could see two individuals, swimming in circles, a sign that they might be looking for food, but then one of them went for a deeper dive. The sei whale got closer to the group of Atlantic dolphins, and both species fed together, and when we thought it was hard to pay attention to both, a Mako shark appeared and stole the spotlight!

The trip was being so incredible that we even forgot about the time… After one last look at the animals we headed back to Ponta Delgada and the dolphins followed us as if they also didn’t want to say goodbye! Fortunately, …
