Today in São Miguel Island we enjoyed the
company of two of our resident dolphin species out on the ocean.
We had common
dolphins in the morning, the one that is usually the most sighted species here
in the Azores throughout the year.

However during the summer this year we have
encountered our resident bottlenose dolphins more than the common dolphins, and
today was no exception. We had two different groups of bottlenose dolphins in
the morning, and we re-encountered one of them in the afternoon.
The “egypcian” bottlenose dolphin was saw today once again. Its dorsal fin is quite easy to distinguish from the rest!

We also had
our swimming boats out there with these dolphins, so we could all enjoy their
company both above and under water.

In Pico Island we travelled many miles but it was worth it! We started
our trip with a very curious group of bottlenose dolphins. Then we had a beaked whale and we went after to see a group of dolphins, many common and also some
very active striped dolphins. To finish the day we encountered a female sperm
whale and a calf breast-feeding.
