Today we had an adventurous morning out of São Miguel island going to see some whales and dolphins. Our lookout told us that there were sperm whales out there and baleen whales, but in the way we found a nice group of bottlenose dolphins.
Then, we decided to go to the baleen whales area. Some of our boats could see two Sei whales swimming really fast. The biologist aboard had to do the explanation there on land, because the boats were not able to stop.
After we saw these huge animals, we went to try our luck and see a sperm whale. But working with wild life is not easy, once in the area we tried to find the sperm whale with the hydrophone and we could hear it, unfortunately we couldn’t see it.
Anyway, we had the opportunity to see another group of bottlenose dolphins in the area were was spotted the sperm whale. These never get tired of us, always going to have a look at us.
In the afternoon we also went out. In one of our boats, we had the pleasure to host an amazing school of Portuguese kids!
We saw two sei whales travelling and coming to the surface regularly. From one of our boats we saw one of the whales turning on the side, and from other boat, even with its mouth open! We are sure these students learnt something about these whales. At least, that they don’t have teeth, and they are called “sardinheiras” in Portuguese!
Then, we saw as well common dolphins. A very nice group and with a lot of calves! Some of them, very very small – baby dolphins!

They delighted all our customers onboard. Usually, we sight more newborns later in summer, but of course, more than welcome!
