June was a
great month for whale and dolphin watching in São Miguel Island.
In total,
we encountered 11 different species of cetaceans.
we encountered 11 different species of cetaceans.
We went out
on 27 days of the month and we encountered cetaceans during every tour.
Our
most sighted species was the common dolphin,
followed by the bottlenose dolphin,
and then the sperm whale.
These three species are resident here in São Miguel and for this reason, we are
lucky to see this species during many of our tours.

We still
managed to encounter some baleen whales, mostly sei whale
but we were also able to meet minke whale 3 days and on one day a fin whale.
Other dolphin species we observed were striped
dolphins and Risso’s dolphins
followed by short-finned pilot whales
and then Atlantic spotted dolphins.
To be in presence of Sowerby’s
beaked whales it is always
something special as it is quite rare to be at the same moment at the same
place as them.
