This morning the sea was mirrored and the sun was shy and in a few minutes we saw our first species … what better to start the day than our resident common dolphins? It was a very large group with many small babies.
After a few minutes we received information from our lookout who had seen more species of cetaceans to the west side of our island. We found a group of very young bottlenose dolphins a few miles out of Ferraria, but a group of sperm whales appeared on the surface and we had to leave the dolphins area. We had two females and one juvenile and a little further we could see a sperm whale male diving.
This afternoon was a bit more windy. We started going to the west part of São Miguel and few miles away from Ferraria we saw a group of six majestic sperm whales. The sperm whale is the biggest predator of the toothed whales and is one of our resident species. We could see some adults with calves. They were resting close to the surface so we had a really wonderful encounter with them.
