Sei whales and thousands of dolphins in São Miguel

Ponta Delgada woke up a bit windy and wavy but we are always excited to look for the amazing whales and dolphins.
Our morning started going directly to the south of São Miguel island. After a while we could manage to find our first species of the day, the Atlantic spotted dolphins. We looked around and then we realized that we were surrounded by dolphins. There were thousands of dolphins foraging accompanied by hundreds of cory’s shearwaters.
It
was a really nice encounter with these playful dolphins. It was not
easy to leave the Atlantic spotted dolphins because they were really
curious following us doing bow-riding.

We continued our trip because our lookouts saw a blow from a baleen whale. The catamaran arrived in the area first and confirmed that it was a Sei whale, the third-largest animal in the world! The whale was moving really fast but we could see a big part of its body, its dorsal fin and even the baleen plates. It is always wonderful to see these beautiful huge mammals on the sea.

In the afternoon, again the same species. Probably the same group of spotted dolphins that we have seen in the morning and the last few days.
Sei whales were travelling, but at some point, the two of them got closer to us to have a look at our boats. We even saw another blow further, so at least three whales were around! Long day, but well deserved before Lorenzo arrives!
