Sunny day which allowed us to go out with great hopes!
Close to shore our lookout saw some common dolphins, full of calves and travelling west. After a few minutes there, lucky break!
Twelve days after our last encounter with sperm whales, the lookouts saw a blow from one (it is not a like baleen whales). As he dived, we were told to go close to where he was.
The zodiac is faster so as he got to the area tried the hydrophone and gave us a more precise direction of the whale. By the metallic click we realized it was a male and when the clicking stopped it means that he was ready to surface. So, we moved our boat slowly while he came from over 1500m deep! It is incredible to see that a tool like the hydrophone can help our team locate these wonderful animals.
After we approached carefully to the whale our biologists started to suspect we knew that whale and with the tail we confirmed… Mr. Liable!! It’s always amazing to see this huge male off São Miguel 🙂
He was performing almost 1-hour dives so all we could do was to see a bit better those common dolphins that actually were more active than in the morning!
The weather just kept improving and we didn’t want to leave but tomorrow is another day and hopefully this good weather will stay.
