More than 1000 dolphins in São Miguel island

Today was a
windy day.

A strong breeze from the north was producing a lot of whitetips on
the sea and refreshing the air during our trip.

Winter feels closer everyday. Even so, today we managed to see more than 1000 dolphins in São Miguel island!

In the
morning we were lucky to find 2 different species of dolphins.
First a big
but spread out group of common dolphins appeared. Different small separate groups
where approaching to our boats. We could feel the size of the group although
they never really formed a compact unit.

After some time with them we navigated
south to find more animals.
This time,
a huge group of Atlantic spotted dolphins was waiting for us. We estimated
about 500 individuals in the area and we could see some really impressive
behaviours.

Big jumps of more than 5 meters, lot of bowriding, foraging and
socializing. We are going to miss this active species of dolphins, soon they’ll
leave our waters.

The
afternoon trip was quite similar to the morning one.
North wind behind us
created white caps and little hard sea conditions.

Hundreds of Atlantic spotted
dolphins appeared relative close to the shore playing, jumping and socializing
around our catamaran 4 Ventos (four winds).

One of the calves was doing
somersaults several times on our front. The group was very active and it was
possible to listen their whistles on our bow.
Following
our windy trip we found a small pod of common dolphins and after some minutes
they disappeared among the waves.

Coming back
to Ponta Delgada we saw again the Atlantic spotted dolphin to say goodbye.
