Humpack whale jump, Mr. Liable and many dolphins in São Miguel

Our first trips of December didn’t disappoint us at all. We saw 4 different species of cetaceans in a day with rough sea and intense whale searching. We started the day with the beautiful tail of the sperm whale Mr Liable. We arrived just on time to see its fluke, right before diving to deeper waters in order to search for food.

After that we headed towards an area with Atlantic spotted dolphins, they are still around, probably water is still warm enough for them to stay here. It was an active group with lots of juvenile individuals.

In the middle of all this show, a big blow appeared, high and vertical: a humpback whale was in the area! We had the opportunity to see its dark body, it impressive head and blowholes. It was a very rare sighting considering the time of the year.

In the afternoon we could find a spread group of common dolphins, we could appreciate its huge number but it was hard to see them properly, they were diving very frequently.

The day was not finished yet, the humpback whale was still around. We found it and was amazing. It fed a couple of times, it swam next to a curious and numerous groups of spotted dolphins and it jumped with its whole body out of the water!

One more beautiful memory, one more intense day in Azorean waters!

Unfortunately on this day it wasn’t possible for our crew to take any pictures.
