We are waiting the arrival of Hurricane Lorenzo, but today was still possible to go out to the sea! Our visitors have experienced on their skin the force of nature. But despite the wavy sea, today has been a fabulous day for whale watching.
The latest news is that Lorenzo could reach part of the archipelago after tomorrow. The Central and Western Groups will be the hardest hit. The Regional Government has already confirmed that it will activate the regional emergency plan from 8 pm tomorrow. Let’s make fingers so that everything goes for the best!
In the morning we spotted two different species of dolphins, first a quite spread out group of Atlantic spotted dolphins with lot of sea birds like Cory’s Shearwater, Manx Shearwater and Great Shearwater. All species, birds and dolphins, were pretty active which indicated the presence of food in that area.
A little further from the coast we found a small group of bottlenose dolphins very curious and very playful with our boats.
In the afternoon we sighted 4 different species of cetaceans!! Baleen whales included!
We started with a big and really active group of common dolphins just out of the marina. Feeding a lot with hundreds of birds. We could even recognize their prey, big schools of mackerel.
We then headed to the most western side of the island, our lookout told us something amazing was awaiting for us. On the way we also found a beautiful group of Atlantic spotted dolphins but we didn’t stay very long, the biggest surprise was near.
Three Sei whales and four sperm whales, all together, something truly unique. The long trip was really worthy. We could compare their sizes, their different blows, their anatomic differences. Two of the biggest animals in the world right off the coast of Mosteiros. What a truly incredible experience!!
