Azorean weather in all its splendour was waiting for
us on this cloudy Sunday morning. Not long after leaving Ponta Delgada we found
a group of bottlenose
dolphins, so curious with
us and our boats that we called by radio to our “swimming with
dolphins” boats to join this group. We kept travelling East.

The visibility was not the best, the fog got thicker
and rain started to appear on our way to the eastern part of the island. All
these unfortunate weather conditions didn’t stop us from finding sperm
whales. We found 2
individuals and were able to see their tails when they went for a deep dive.

In the afternoon the conditions changed drastically,
the sun started to shine strongly, and we really felt the summer heat. We found
sperm whales again, three adults and one tiny calf that was very curious with
one of our boats. Again, we could see some tails that will be useful for our
Photo-ID studies. The lookout directed us to a playful group of common
dolphins, but we didn’t
spend much time with them, the biggest surprise of the day was waiting for us.

Seven Sowerby’s beaked whales delighted us staying on the surface for a longer time than usual, swimming
along with our boats. We identified the species by their pointy beak that
differentiates them from other beaked whales. Usually, sightings of these
species are rare as they spent most of their lives underwater but today was an
exception. Great sightings today, this ocean always has the power of surprising
us greatly.
