Today we saw sperm whales out of São Miguel island. In the morning, sperm whales were easy to find because the sea was really calm, they were socializing and going for shallow dives.

This kind of dive is more noticeable for being horizontal and it is more used to travel. When they show the tail, they go for a feeding dive and today looked like that they were not hungry.

In the afternoon, we could see sperm whales again, but the sea was a little rougher. We spotted them because we saw them breaching from far away. Once we were in the area of the sperm whales, we observed the same behaviour as in the morning.
We sighted Risso’s dolphins in the morning and in the afternoon. In the group, we could identify some individuals that we already know thanks to the work from photo-ID. Moreover, during the morning tour, we saw a few bottlenose dolphins and a big group of common dolphins.
A total of four species today!
