A big group of Risso’s dolphins in Pico Island

Two days ago, we had this beautiful sighting of an uncommonly numerous group of Risso’s dolphins. The biggest amount of them are densely scarred and seem to be older males with some younger ones, more greyish, also mixed together with this group.

It also seemed to be a junction of more than one pod of Risso’s, as this dolphin species frequently move in smaller pods. We observed intense social behaviours in-between them, with at surface ”chasing races” and underwater swimmings uncommonly close to, and around each other. Notice on the video the tight structure they organized themselfes in. From the boat (water’s surface) we could also observe a star formation, with heads facing the inside, collapsing with each other.
It was truly incredible to watch from the boat (and on video, as we arrived to our land base!)
