Amazing bowriding show!

Another amazing day! Today we had a very sunny day and a calm sea. We started our trip by going East where we were surprised by the first sighting of the day – common dolphins, but the biggest surprise of all was the show that these dolphins gave to us.

The group of common dolphins decided to approach our boat and bow ride with us, giving in the middle of this amazing jumps.

The behavior that we observed today with this species is actually very common with the striped dolphins and not so much with common dolphins.

Continuing our travel and going further east we found a group of sperm whales. And you know what? This group is known to be the red group.

A group of sperm whales that we have been studying for several years and that we are able to identify some of the individuals. Between them, we were able to see one of our most famous female sperm whales ‘Orca’ that has this name due to the white patch that she has in her back. Together with ‘Orca’ we also ‘Bear Paw’ and her calf.

The three stayed close to the surface during a while, time that we think that ‘Bear Paw’ might have been nursing her calf. After a good time, they decided to dive, and was time for us to leave and go back to Ponta Delgada. But this was not the end of our sightings.

On our long way back we were able to observe Atlantic Spotted Dolphins. A group of around 300 approached our boats once again and made us company for some time on our way back. This group was full of calves riding beside their mothers. This is very common in this time of the year, as this is a seasonal species, that comes to the Azores due to its warm waters. Besides this, some of our boats also observed beaked whales that we weren’t able to identify and bottlenose dolphins.

We finally said goodbye to these dolphins and started the return to our marina. We were so lucky today! Come enjoy experiences like the one we had today by joining our daily trips.
