4 Humpback whales and lots of dolphins

Today we left Ponta Delgada with a beautiful sunny day. A soft ocean breeze was making navigation a pleasure, visibility was great and the expectations of finding cetaceans were high.

First of all, a group of common dolphins was sighted by one of our lookouts. We got to the area and we found calm and social animals, swimming around our boat and bowriding all the time. Soon after, they started feeding along with some birds, mainly Cory’s shearwaters. It was hypnotic to see, fluent and exact movements, pure synchronization between birds and dolphins.

In the middle of this beautiful sighting… A bigger splash closer to shore was see by our captain! What was it? We headed that way and a majestic humpback whale started tailslapping several times. Another individual appeared! In no time 4 different humpback whales were swimming together, always towards the west. What a beautiful and unexpected sighting!

Another group of common dolphins was the icing on the cake, this time with a rougher sea, allowing them to surf the waves at high speeds, they make it look so easy.

What a day! What a lovely day! Life in the ocean never stops, even during the hardest times.
