We started this Saturday with a bit of clouds and found a small group of bottlenose dolphins who didn’t want to hang out too much with our boats but luckily our lookout spotted a group of common dolphins nearby so we went there to see quite a show by them as they were so many and got super interested in us, performing some high jumps for our guests!
On the afternoon we had the information of our lookout that some sperm whales were at surface near Mosteiros (the most west village in São Miguel). We decided to do a longer trip since it is always a great experience to be able to see these big resident animals in the Azores and indeed it was, as soon as we got to the end of the island there was a big group of common dolphins with Cory’s shearwater, so an extra for the long trip.
Quickly we kept on heading to the sperm whale area and started to see several blows, at first the animals were a bit shy and went for a shallow dive but in a few minutes two females came up near the boat to breathe and just rest on the surface allowing our guests to see the top part of the biggest toothed predator in the world.
After a few moments they told us it was time to go as they slowly arched their dorsal to go for a deep dive, showing their tail one at a time, so plenty of time for the guests and us to see this action. Join us for a unique experience!
