Fin whale, Sperm whales, Bottlenose and Common dolphins in São Miguel!

The feeling of summer is already in the air and we are starting to enjoy some more typical summer weather sightings as well as the migrating baleen whales that continue to pass through the area.

In the morning we started off with a very nice group of bottlenose dolphins not far from Ponta Delgada.

They were very curious and playful around our boats and we got to see a lot of high jumps. We also had some common dolphins around and we could see some small calves which we will continue to enjoy as the summer progresses.

Further to the west we had a big group of sperm whales to see. There were at least 6-8 of them spread out and coming up at different times. We encountered a young juvenile in this group and we could also see two distant tails as the whales began their deep dives.

Not far from the sperm whales were more bottlenose dolphins, so there were plenty of sightings to keep us smiling during the morning.

In the afternoon we had the information of our lookout that there were two fin whales in the area. Shortly after arriving to the area we saw a blow in the distance and we went there. We waited a few minutes and a fin whale surfaced next to our boat.

We could hear and see the blow and then its back and dorsal fin appeared. Shortly after we had more sightings of the second biggest animal in the world. After a while we went on to see playful common dolphins which seemed to have fun surfing the waves, also the once which were created by the boat.
On our way back we came across curious bottlenose dolphins some of the riding the bow and breaching. A very nice experience for everybody on board!
