The month of August was really good for whale watching here in São Miguel. Throughout the month we sighted 9 different cetacean species. This time of the year we always have a high chance of seeing sperm whales which is a resident species here, and it is also the time of year that we see many large groups of dolphins with many babies in the groups.
This month’s sighting statistics were:
- Fin whale (Balaenoptera physalus) – 4%
- Sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus) – 62%
- Beaked whale (Both Sowerby’s and Blainville’s beaked whales were sighted) – 15%
- Pilot whale (Globicephalus macrorhynchus) – 8%
- Risso’s dolphin (Grampus griseus) – 35%
- Striped dolphin (Stenella coeruleoalba) – 15%
- Atlantic spotted dolphin (Stenella frontalis) – 73%
- Bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) – 35%
