This past month we have encountered 10 different cetacean species: fin whales, sei whales (the last baleen whales of the season), sperm whales, false killer whales, pilot whales, Risso’s dolphins, striped dolphins, Atlantic spotted dolphins, bottlenose dolphins and common dolphins. Every day that we went to sea we encountered at least 3 different species, and one day we even encountered 7 different species! We also encountered many loggerhead turtles, ocean sunfish, marlin and hammerhead sharks. Below are the daily encounter frequencies of all cetacean species encountered in July:
- Common dolphin (Delphinus delphis) – 97%
- Bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) – 97%
- Atlantic spotted dolphin (Stenella frontalis) – 86%
- Striped dolphin (Stenella coerueoalba) – 7%
- Risso’s dolphin (Grampus griseus) – 25%
- Pilot whale spp. (Globicephala spp.) – 3%
- False killer whale (Pseudorca crassidens) – 10%
- Sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus) – 69%
- Sei whale (Balaenoptera borealis) – 7%
- Fin whale (Balaenoptera physalus) – 14%
