Spotted dolphins, bottlenose dolphins and many sperm whales

What a morning! We had a pod of bottlenose dolphins and sperm whales around! The sperm whales were popping up at the surface, and the dolphins joined the sperm whales. This allowed us to directly compare the sperm whale size to the bottlenose dolphins. Bottlenose dolphins can reach 4 meters, and the female sperm whales up to 12m. So that is quite a difference!

After the sperm whale’s dove, one of our cribs managed to listen to some of the clicks of the sperm whales, and the whistles of the dolphins at the same time! So, we had a morning filled with an interaction of bottlenose dolphins and sperm whales.

In the afternoon, the sea was a little bit choppy but that was not a problem for the animals. Our first sighting was one sperm whale but fast we realized that was not the only one in the area. In total there was a minimum of 5 sperm whales in the area and they all showed their magnificent tail.

The next species was one of our seasonal dolphins, Atlantic spotted dolphins! The group was not very big but was still possible to distinguish the adult individual, full of spots, from the juveniles, with no spots. The group of sperm whales in the morning belong to the white group! We got to identified 4 individuals from the group: Penakabe, Queijada, Whitehead and Inês.
